Occupational therapy addresses a person’s ability to return to their everyday life activities. These include home, work/school, community, and leisure activities. At ESP Sports Medicine in Lafayette, Colorado, our expert occupational therapist completes a thorough occupational therapy evaluation to identify any areas of impairment that limit a person’s performance of their daily tasks. These impairments can by physical, sensory, visual, perceptual, and/or cognitive.
Orthopedic injuries such as breaks, muscle strains and sprains, as well as tendonitis/tendinopathy are evaluated and treated by occupational therapists. Our individualized 1:1 client centered upper extremity therapy, including occupational hand therapy, fosters healing and improved functional arm/hand use. Our therapist utilizes soft tissue mobilization occupational therapy and manual therapy techniques. She also uses proper progression of exercises, patient education, swelling and pain control techniques to maximize functional outcomes for the patient. Sensory re-education may also be a part of the treatment for impaired sensation and hypersensitivity.
An occupational therapist is also able to treat patients with neurological problems. This treatment improves eye movements and vision, vestibular issues, perception, information processing, thinking skills, sensory re-education, and compensation techniques. Re-education of the neuromuscular system facilitates movement, strength, and coordination. It also improves trunk strength and postural control which enhances stability and balance while performing tasks.
Treatments include patient and family education to promote understanding and follow through of the techniques and exercises the patient is learning. We foster independence and the individual’s goals are the utmost priority.
